The Mammal

PHYSICAL • COLLABORATIVE BUILD • WORKSHOP

The MML (Mobile Media Lab), designed and built in collaboration with Regent Park youth, is intended to serve as a vehicle through which Regent Park Focus can transport its media production and presentation activities outside the bounds of its basement headquarters and into the wider community. Operating in manifold mobile and deployment modes and supporting multiple forms of media, the MML allows Regent Park Focus to engage with the public through the appropriation and creation of physical and virtual space.

My primary responsibility of the was to explore how the MaMmaL could move beyond a simple physical deployment and function as a mechanism for appropriating virtual space.. This was accomplished through sound and light.

sound machine

A solar powered reconstituted radio. The vehicle was also outfitted with a radio transmitter that could be used to seize radio space within a small radius. Each sound machine was autonomous and could be individually controlled or all could simultaneously be deployed to create a completely engulfing auditory experience.

The “light” panels also served a means of appropriating virtual space and worked in close conjunction with the sound panels. The “light” panels responded to changes in the environment beginning to pulse with changes in activity (i.e. sound). Additionally, the panels also served as seats which when deployed created an analog performance of light.

The mobile media was launched with a ceremonial ride during Critical Mass to the Regent Park Focus Headquarters. The mobile media lab continues to be used by Regent Park Focus for various events, including the Catch da Flava radio show on the Mammal! Check out the mammal in action.
